Devil Dog Day, Pines Beach 2 months after Canterbury Quake

Two months post 04.09.10 Canterbury quake, 7.1 magnitude, I drove about 25 kms from my Burnside, Christchurch home to Kairaki Beach & Pines Beach to coolpix liquefaction ravaged houses on beach sand.

At Kairaki Beach, repairs were done to quake bumpy, Featherstone Ave. A zebra would've been easily camouflaged against new tar seal, road stripes in the road dip to the camping ground. I watched white baiters tending their nets at Waimakariri River mouth, despite health hazard WARNING signs about sewage pollution, then drove to Pines Beach.

A Pines Beach resident we'd met at Kaiapoi told us that 70 houses out of a total of 300 Pines Beach houses were badly damage by the quake, especially houses on the flats. Her hilltop house was undamaged.

I drove bumpy, quake rutted Reid Memorial Ave to the beach & found the concrete bldg on a dune undamaged by the quake, it had good foundations. On my bumpy way back to Pines Beach village I saw signs stating that Pegasus Bay Walkway was closed.

I drove around Pines Beach, mostly deserted, with houses on dunes looking OK, but hell houses on sandy flats deserted, in bad shape:

Pines Beach, abandoned houses were quake shifted forwards, backwards, sideways; sunk into liquefaction sand; cracked; tilted; twisted; chimneys toppled; concrete paths & driveways cracked; broken garages, sheds, awnings, trellises; wood deckings awry; curtains closed; doors & windows locked / closed, some warped open; broken, leaning fences; plastic taped; weeds & long grass overgrowing devastation; rubbish & junk in gardens: old shoes, clothes, plates, garden furniture...

Below a grassy dune, in midday sun, I coolpixed deserted, red stickered, Hood Ave houses. Bright sunshine had faded the red stickers pink.

After glaring at me for a while, a drunk wobbled over from his Chichester St house, while I coolpixed Batten Grove houses. He slopped a half empty glass of red wine, reeked of sweat & booze, his grey, greasy fur awry.

His face was red, eyes popping, staring like The Last Judgement damned in Michaelangelo's Sistine Chapel fresco. Several times he growled, "WHY are you photographing?"

I explained photo-blogging, but it took a while to sink in, as he didn't have a computer. He growled there'd already been burglaries in empty houses, but he was last there, in his red stickered, unsafe, tilted house, shifted 20 centimetres sideways in the quake. He yelped an aftershock had shifted nearby land about 30 centimetres, another aftershock had shifted it back again.

He barked that a builder who'd laid a concrete foundation at his neighbour's Chichester St house, days before the quake, had lost $10,000, as the quake cracked the foundation at every corner & insurance didn't cover damages during building.

With boozy bonhomie, fury & self pity, he showed me his friendly mastiff, which put its front paws on his low garden wall & let me pat its huge head.

The drunk whined, "The wise man built his house upon the rock..." He waved at his undulating wooden decking, shaky, wooden trellises & growled I must look at his shifted hell house.

I did, up the gravel driveway to the back of his tilted house. When I asked if I could take a photograph, he shook his head, stumbled through his front door & barked, "I'm sick of tourists & aftershocks!"

Although a Reid Memorial Ave hell house was quake split & abandoned, in the backyard, on the dune, two devil dogs silently stared at me through kennel fences: an Alsation stood, a black & white sheepdog lay, waiting beyond doomsday.

09.12.10. The Press reported that Pines Beach dairy owner, Dunns Ave, would be closing down business, due to reduced custom from post quake Pines Beach ghost town. The owner said that out of 307 Pines Beach houses about 90 quake damaged houses would need to be rebuilt.

Coda: 19.08.11. The Press reported that on 18.08.11 NZ govt / CERA announced, nearly a year post Sept 4 quake: "940 orange zone homes in the district including 840 in Kaiapoi and 80 in Pines Beach are placed in the red zone..." Kairaki Beach was also red zoned.

It was too expensive to repair red zone, quake damaged land. Red zone home owners would evacuate & negotiate with NZ govt & / or insurers for compensation.

Pines Beach flats housing was red zoned. Pines Beach dune top housing wasn't red zoned.

Mark: Quake red sticker, Pines Beach: "DO NOT ENTER OR OCCUPY, WARNING. This bldg has been seriously damaged and is unsafe. Do not enter. Entry may result in death or injury..."

Saw many deserted houses like that yesterday, all within 200 m, & 1 house's "new" foundations badly cracked. All built on beach sand. Road repairs being done. November 17 at 9.27 am.

Maggie (RSA): Who in their right minds passes plans for building on beach sand? Sounds like this country. November 18 at 6.36 am.

Mark: Bet there're many planners, councillors, surveyors, engineers, architects, builders, estate agents... ducking for cover, since their sins sunk into sand.

Post quake, there are cynical blue & white signs by badly damaged areas like Avonside & Spencerville / Brooklands: "Non residents are asked not to enter this area. Traffic may cause further damage to roads and properties. Please respect the needs of local residents." Bad eggs don't want their sins exposed. November 18 at 10.05 am.

Mark: 04.09.10 Some Canterbury Quake Towns. 79 new photos. November 18 at 11.02 am.

Mark: Coolpix were taken 2 months post Sept 4 quake, during sunny A & P weekend+, November 12-16, with clean ups sort of completed, roads & river stop banks being repaired in places & bldgs being repaired or abandoned, new summer grass already covering damage. Some towns, streets & bldgs were deserted: too dangerous, like movie ghost towns, but real. "Normal" life & business mostly continued, despite devastation & quake signs & stickers & workmen doing repairs. November 18 at 7.36 am.

Andrew (RSA): Thanks for the great pics Mark. The quake certainly caused a lot of damage. November 18 at 7.36 pm.

Mark: Other day at Pines Beach, I spoke to a grizzled, bearded, pony-tailed man, drinking wine at midday. He said, "I'm the only one left in my street. My house moved 20 cm sideways in the quake & twisted." I saw several twisted, tilted houses, moved about 20 cm from cracked concrete around them at Hood Ave & Batten Grove - all built on sand. November 20 at 3.27 pm.

Mark: Our landlady checked our Heath St rental house today. Found several cracked wood sections under the roof & a cracked roof truss, so aftershocks caused damage. Quake damage claims must be submitted to the Earthquake Commission by the end of the month, 3 months post quake. November 20 at 3.53 pm.

Mark. Three more aftershocks last night: 11.55 pm - 2.10 am (Mon - Tues) magnitudes 3.6, 3.0, 2.8, 10 km - 20 km west of Christchurch (Geonet). Disturbed my sleep, giving me acid reflux. November 30 at 9.20 am.

Averil (RSA): Just worried about your latest post on the tremors you are experiencing. Is this a common thing? Anything to do with dormant volcanoes? Are the tremors felt all thru NZ? December 1 at 6.26 am.

Mark: Averil, tremors all over NZ, mostly unfelt, depending on depth of quake & distance one is from the epicentre, as NZ is on the Pacific / Australian tectonic plates. There are only extinct volcanoes near Chch. Nearby Port Hills & Banks Peninsula were formed by volcanoes.

Auckland is built on 49 hopefully extinct volcanoes. Other volcanoes on the North Island: Mt Taranaki / Egmont (eroding quickly), Mt Tongariro, Mt Ngauruhoe & Mt Ruapehu which is active & erupted in 2007 & 1996, spewing ash while we've been in NZ, but it's about 800 km north of us, thank goodness.

As Rotorua is north of Mt Ruapehu it has lots of hot springs, boiling mud pools, electricity produced from steam etc, a hell zone built on the edge of a volcanic caldera. When we 1st arrived in NZ, I took Leah & the boys to Rotorua. Sons still remember the rotten eggs smell there, hydrogen sulphide. Fumeroles scary, gusts of hot, roaring gases from holes in the ground by boiling mud pools & hot water pools & geysers around town (usually safety fenced) so one has to be careful where one walks. Best to stick to known paths in places in / near Rotorua. Tourists love Rotorua, sense of danger & warm spas of course.

Hanmer Springs, about 100 km north of Chch, has hot spa water too & we occasionally go there for a dip to get away from the maddening crowds, although hot pools are popular too.

We're having big aftershocks at the moment, because of the BIG Sept 4 quake, but hopefully they'll subside in time, so experts say, so we ride them, a bit like wobbling on a canoe. December 2 at 1.48 pm.
