Use The Door Next Time God!

Opawa, Hillsborough focus. National State-of-Emergency, Wed, 06.04.11. Six weeks post 22 February 2011 quake, M6.3, after dropping Luke off at Sullivan Ave tech, I parked at nearby Aynsley Tce, Opawa, as I wanted to see what the 22 February 2011 quake did to suburbs near Port Hills.

Like many Christchurch concrete-bridges which survived the quake, Opawa Rd Bridge over Heathcote River was damaged at span & abutment joins, which knocked & spalled in quakes.

12.11.11. Quake survivor, Opawa Community Church & church hall demolition site, seen from Heathcote River footbridge, Aynsley Tce

Aynsley Tce: Like so many Christchurch brick-churches, Opawa Community Church was ruined by the 22 February 2011 quake. The brick-hall looked like a missile had gone clean through, leaving gaping brick-walls. Exposed interior. Bricks fallen from side-walls. Roof & ceiling was intact, upheld by wooden-beams. Brick rubble-heaps in churchyard, steel-mesh-fence-cordoned. The hall would be demolished. The church: cracked, brick, crenellated-turret, exposed roof-space, fallen-bricks in garden, steel-mesh-fence-cordoned. The church would survive the quakes.

Church board:

"God is closer than you think

'in God we live, move, & have our being.' Epimenides 600BC"

Graffiti above the sign read: USE THE DOOR NEXT TIME GOD!

06.04.11. Feb 22 quake, sewage contaminated Heathcote River, Aynsley Tce, national state of emergency

Aynsley Tce  by sewage-polluted Heathcote River: Threat-signs on the riverbank: WARNING CONTAMINATED WATER, POLLUTED WATER PLEASE AVOID CONTACT. Aynsley Tce & side-roads had portaloos on footpaths, quakemire on footpaths & curbs. A yellow sewage-tanker blasted water down a sewage-pipe, clearing quakemire, but obstructing traffic which weaved round the tanker. I'd seen many sewage-tankers sucking muck & water-blasting muck over the last few weeks. I called sewage-tankers "sucker trucks".

A chilly autumn wind blew off Heathcote River while I pondered engineers' recent warnings that Christchurch sewage-system was in bad shape: quakemire in sewage-pipes & many broken-pipes. After rains, storm-water leaked into sewage-pipes, household effluent & quakemire- clogging stressed Bromley treatment-ponds. (One News 06.04.11). What happened to the vaunted, new sewage-outlet pipe into the Pacific? Luke recently spent a day on the beach, returning home with a guts-ache. I warned him about sewage-toxic beaches.

Aynsley Tce: Most houses survived the quakes well, small damages, & driveway cracks. But the old, two-storey brick house, Aynsley Tce / Centaurus Rd, was damaged by the 4 September 2010 quake & ruined by the 22 February 2011 quake: roof partially collapsed, again, roof-space exposed, fallen brick-gable, many wall-cracks, house empty, red-stickered, brick-rubble on the garden slope, DANGER KEEP OUT white-plastic-barrier-tape-cordoned.

Centaurus Rd, up Glenelg Spur: Fallen concrete gate-post, concrete-bricks on footpath. Trashed housing: 1. Two-storey brick-house, red- stickered, scaffolded. 2. A yellow-digger parked atop demolished house rubble. 3. Another two-storey house, garage-doors popped open, garage- contents exposed, concrete brick-wall cracked, fallen concrete-bricks in garden, white-plastic-barrier-tape-cordoned. 4. Fallen brick-chimney, fallen brick-gables, exposing attic. Threat-sign:

06.04.11. Feb 22 quake damaged roof, Centaurus Rd, national state of emergency

06.04.11. Quake damaged, boarded, wood braced house, Port Hills Rd, national state of emergency

Down Glenelg Spur along Port Hills Rd: Smaller Hillsborough houses were damaged, quakemire on footpaths & curbs.

Busy Opawa Rd: Big concrete-drain behind Port Hills Rd houses. Hillsborough Park, undamaged. Some older wooden-houses had roof- damages.

06.04.11. Steel mesh fence cordon. Open drain running behind Port Hills Rd houses, Opawa Rd, national state of emergency

Grange St: broken-footpaths, broken-driveways, broken-housing: two houses: brick-walls were wood-braced. I'd never buy a house in upmarket Aynsley Tce, nor Hillsborough, after seeing quake-damages between Port Hills & Heathcote River.

06.04.11. Post quake, wood braced house, Grange St, national state of emergency

07.04.11. Thurs, 3.57am, M4.0 quake, 11km deep, 10km E of Christchurch. (GeoNet). I was improving guesstimating quake magnitudes: M4.0 & upwards shook my computer-monitor, unnerving, warning me to vamoose! Anything less, ignored.

*Trekked Aynsley Tce, Centaurus Rd, Port Hills Rd, Opawa Rd, Grange St. 46 snaps.
