Christchurch Cathedral Ghosts, Post Quakes

Sat 26.11.11. Christchurch Cathedral was trashed in the Feb 22 & June 13, magnitude 6,3 quakes, the spire & tower collapsing, Feb 22, the western rose window wall collapsing, June 13.

Post Feb 22 quake, Christchurch CBD was occupied by CERA & strangled by a series of shrinking fence cordons, guarded by cops & NZDF soldiers at various checkpoints, which choked the life out of the red zone CBD. So far, for more than 9 months, CBD bldgs stood abandoned.

Ghosts.

Post Feb 22 quake, national state of emergency ended, CERA continued to choke the CBD red zone. Celebrities; clerics; local & foreign councillors; cops; CERA officials; insurance bosses & contractors were allowed into the CBD.

Citizens were banned.

Sat 26.11.11. CERA opened Cathedral Sq to the public for a short time between demolitions. I snapped pics of wasted Christchurch Cathedral that sunny afternoon. Christchurch Cathedral was deconsecrated a couple of weeks ago for deconstruction / demolition. (Wishful thinking by Anglicans, as heritage fanatics would block demolition for years by court actions.)

I parked my car on St Asaph St, then snapped red zone, fence cordoned McKenzie Willis demolition site, where I'd snapped death trap, brick bldgs, part demolished, post Feb 22 quake.

Ghosts.

Images, quake damaged St Asaph St:

26.11.11. Post quakes, CBD red zone, demolition site, St Asaph St

I walked down a St Asaph St alley & snapped a red zone, fence cordoned, High St / Tuam St corner. I snapped Holiday Inn & Hotel Grand Chancellor. Both high rises were soon demolished.

Ghosts.

A sign on a fence cordon read:

EXTREME
 DANGER
    KEEP
     OUT

26.11.11. St Asaph St, CBD red zone, alley view of demolition site by Tuam St / High St cnr. Alice in Videoland (old PO) left

26.11.11. St Asaph St, alley view of CBD red zone, tourist bus on Tuam St, going towards Manchester St. Holiday Inn & Hotel Grand Chancellor left, were soon demolished. Alice in Videoland (old PO) right

26.11.11. St Asaph St view of CBD, red zone high rises: Westpac, Holiday Inn, Hotel Grand Chancellor, all were demolished

Further on, I snapped a fence cordoned, deserted St Asaph St / Manchester St corner. A camping shop was OPEN. Northwards along Manchester St, bldgs were quake trashed, some part demolished, awaiting full demolitions. One bldg facade was supported by a wall of shipping containers.

St Asaph St / Manchester St checkpoint cordon fences had signs which read:

NO PUBLIC
PAST THIS
   POINT!

                 ACCESS POINT
          HOURS OF OPERATION
6 AM TO 7 PM DAILY
        OUTSIDE OF THIS TIME USE
MANCHESTER ST / CAMBRIDGE TCE
                    ACCESS POINT

Another sign was identical, except for the access point reading: MADRAS ST / KILMORE ST. Imagine all the heavy trucks roaming around at night, messing CBD roads, while looking for access points.

In the red zone CBD on Tuam St, a sign on an abandoned wall had a NZ flag painted with the message:

     LET'S BUILD OUR
NEW CITY TOGETHER
         KIA KAHA

CERA's quake tourist bus drove past in the red zone. During weekend & twilight bus tours, quake tourist buses would do more damage to quake trashed roads & bldgs. Never mind damage done to road infrastructure by heavy, steel-track diggers & cranes. All over Christchurch scraped & scarred roads could be seen, where massive diggers & cranes had damaged roads & pavements.

All the dusty bldgs in the CBD red zone were abandoned.

Ghosts.

Trouble for future generations was that CERA was hell bent on rebuilding Christchurch CBD on swampland on top of the CBD Fault. By Oct 2013 CERA had the bright idea of making the speed limit 30 km / hour in its core CBD.

26.11.11. Manchester St, CBD red zone, cordon view of Sept 4 quake, demolition site / car park & red zone Tuam St / High St cnr. Alice in Videoland (old PO) left. The middle bldgs along High St were demolished

26.11.11. Post quakes demolition sites, N along Manchester St, CBD red zone. Seen from St Asaph St. Foreground bldgs & Holiday Inn behind were demolished

26.11.11. St Asaph St view of camping shop open sign, Manchester St. CBD red zone, cordon fence. NZDF checkpoint huts & dead bldgs beyond fence

Colombo St was busy with shoppers on their way to recently opened Restart Cashel Mall. I directed a lost backpacker, waving a map, to the new, temporary Bus Exchange. CERA would leave the red zone CBD in ruins & demolition sites for years. Shocking for thrill seeking tourists & awful for citizens.

I wandered down Colombo St towards Cashel St, demolition sites both sides of the road, past the lethal section, near Mollett St, where 16 people were killed by falling masonry, Feb 22 quake.

Images, quake damaged Colombo St:

26.11.11. Colombo St, red zone view of demolition cranes & serial quake trashed bldgs. Westpac middle, awaiting demolition

At Restart Cashel Mall a moronic, Ryan Security man, sporting an olive green shirt, obstructed foot traffic at the newly opened walkway entrance to Christchurch Cathedral. He insisted every pedestrian arriving along Colombo St south must make a little detour to the north side of his cordon entrance to walk to the Cathedral.

By The Crossing, the new walkway entrance to Colombo St was too small for the volume of foot traffic. CERA symbolized its obstructions with that small entrance, blocking foot flow. Never mind the security man, he obeyed CERA's stupid orders.

26.11.11. The Crossing view S along post quakes Colombo St, viewed from the CBD red zone

A CERA fence sign, with walkway rules, further obstructed the walkway & blocked the view along red zoned Cashel St, eastwards. CERA's dictatorship showed in its signage:

CERA
Canterbury Earthquake
Recovery Authority

Cathedral Square walkway

Weekends: 9 am - 8 pm until Sunday 11 December

It is your decision to enter this area.
Read this first:

1. This space is still dangerous.
2. If there is an earthquake or other event
you may be seriously injured or may not survive.
3. This is CERA space, not public space. There are conditions you must meet:

* maximum 300 visitors at any one time
* stay within the fences
* maximum visit duration 50 minutes - the walkway is cleared on the hour
* no pets (guide dogs permitted)
* carry personnel ID on your body, not in a bag
* wear sturdy shoes
* carry a charged cell phone or tell someone where you are going.

If there is an earthquake or other significant event
Drop                           Cover                         Hold
and follow the instructions of security personnel.

An emergency evacuation will be signalled by the constant sound of
horns or sirens. Follow the instructions of security personnel.

CERA didn't elaborate on "other event" nor where sightseers should "Drop Cover Hold" in another quake. My experience of big quakes was that people froze on the spot, without childish "Drop Cover Hold." Quakes actually stopped or retarded human movement, due to all the fearsome shaking & jolting. People reacted differently to quakes. Most froze, some moved with extreme difficulty.

CERA conditions were designed to create quake fear, rather than citizens' confidence in CERA's abilities: Wear closed shoes. Carry ID. Carry cell phone... So what? Jandals were abundantly worn on the walkway, myself included.

26.11.11. CERA walkway rules sign, CBD red zone cordon fence, obscuring E view of closed Cashel St

26.11.11. The Crossing E view along CBD red zone Cashel St. Westpac right awaiting demolition

26.11.11. Cnr Colombo St / Cashel St, CBD red zone. Most bldgs in the pic were demolished

CERA was there by citizen sufferance & NZ govt decree. CERA dictatorship, with unelected bosses, had forgotten CERA was formed post quakes to serve Christchurch citizens & their RECOVERY.

26.11.11. Colombo St, CBD red zone, closed shops, between Cashel St / Hereford St. USAR / TF graffiti on glass door. Clear meant no bodies. The bldg was demolished

26.11.11. Colombo St, red zone, fence cordoned walkway, S view. Bldgs on right awaited demolition

26.11.11. Boarded, closed, McDonald's, CBD red zone, fence cordoned walkway, Colombo St. McDonalds was demolished

26.11.11. Colombo St, CBD red zone, fence cordoned walkway, N view

CERA hadn't developed Christchurch during pre quake years. Christchurch citizens did. So far, CERA had just demolished quake trashed bldgs. CERA had yet to prove its ability to rebuild Christchurch.

A year later, Oct 2012, CERA still occupied the red zone CBD, was still slowly demolishing bldgs & still banned citizens from the red zone CBD. It had made an expensive Central Christchurch Development Unit, CCDU Blueprint, with CBD rebuild still stalled. CERA didn't bother making a rebuild Blueprint for quake shattered suburbs.

Mar 2013. No rebuild in the red zone CBD, citizens still banned. CERA's excuse: It was still buying CBD land for the rebuild.

Nov 2013. Ditto.

26.11.11. Fence cordoned, closed, red zone Timezone, CBD red zone, Colombo St. Timezone was demolished

26.11.11. Quake closed, red zone KFC, to be demolished, Colombo St

26.11.11. Quake closed, red zone shops, cnr Milano bldg to be demolished, cnr Colombo St / High St

I wandered down red zone, fence cordoned Colombo St to Cathedral Sq, past abandoned, dusty, shops with ubiquitous USAR / TF graffiti on windows, past KFC, past McDonald's, past Burger King, all abandoned. Most bldgs on that stretch of Colombo St, between Restart Cashel Mall / Hereford St, would be demolished.

Ghosts.

Nine months post Feb 22 quake, a rotten food reek still polluted the air.

26.11.11. Fence cordoned, boarded, closed Burger King, CBD red zone, Colombo St. Burger King was demolished

26.11.11. Quake closed, fence cordoned, red zone, 24 Hours Dairy, to be demolished, Colombo St

Both sides of desolate Hereford St had quake demolition sites, behind red zone cordon fences. A red digger was parked on one demolition site, gob gaping.

The red zone fence cordon, both sides of citizens, looped into the middle of Cathedral Sq, enabling citizens to gawp, grieve & snap.

CERA's Demolition HQ, porta-cabin offices, portaloos & a NZDF checkpoint hut stood behind a red zone fence by Starbucks, old Post Office bldg. Telecom Exchange was behind. All red zone, CBD bldgs were abandoned.

26.11.11. Red stickered, red zoned, closed BNZ, to be demolished, cnr Colombo St / Hereford St. USAR / TF graffiti on door & wall. Clear meant no bodies

26.11.11. Fence cordoned, CBD red zone, BNZ, to be demolished, cnr Cathedral Sq / Colombo St

26.11.11. Quake obsolete direction sign, Colombo St / Cathedral Sq

26.11.11. Fence cordoned, CBD red zone, boarded ANZ bldg, cnr Colombo St / Cathedral Sq. ANZ was demolished

Southern Encounters bldg, next to old Regent Theatre, was gone, both demolished. Opposite stood closed Grant Thornton bldg, awaiting demolition. The old bldg by Chancery Ln was gone, demolished.

Ghosts.

North towards Victoria Sq, behind a red zone cordon fence, beside Colombo St north, a digger worked on top of a pile of rubble, a demolition in progress. North loured abandoned MFL, Forsyth Barr & Price Waterhouse Cooper high rises, awaiting demolition, or restoration (Forsyth Barr).

Ghosts.

Abandoned Camelot Hotel loured over Warners Hotel & The Press demolition sites. Camelot Hotel was demolished for Central Library rebuild.

Ghosts.

26.11.11. CBD red zone, fence cordoned, Cathedral Sq view of demolition site, Colombo St N cnr. Abandoned MFL & Forsyth Barr bldgs right. All bldgs in the pic were demolished except Forsyth Barr

Amidst shady trees, Godley bronze statue was gone. Ghost. Kids played around the quake survivor plinth. In front of Christchurch Cathedral was a cop kiosk & parked cop car, Canterbury police state, alive & well.

26.11.11. CBD red zone crowd by Godley statue plinth, Cathedral Sq. Abandoned Millennium Hotel left, BNZ middle, to be demolished & Chalice sculpture behind tree

26.11.11. Godley statue plinth, red zone, Cathedral Sq. Southern Encounters & Regent Theatre demolition site beyond. Clarendon Tower to be demolished behind

Eastwards, beyond a red zone cordon fence, the War Memorial, bronze angel statue stood firm, breasts jutting to the blue sky. Warners Hotel was gone, demolished. The Press bldg, where a worker was killed in the Feb 22 quake was gone, demolished.

26.11.11. War Memorial, Angel statue, quakes survivor, Cathedral Sq, CBD red zone. Warners Hotel demolition site & The Press demolition site behind. High rises Novotel left & Pacific Tower (Rendezvous Hotel) behind were restored

26.11.11. Abandoned, fence cordoned, serial quake trashed, deconsecrated Christchurch Cathedral, Cathedral Sq, CBD red zone

26.11.11. Abandoned, fence cordoned, serial quake trashed, deconsecrated Christchurch Cathedral. Abandoned Millennium Hotel right, red zone, Cathedral Sq

Christchurch Cathedral ghost:

Behind a red zone cordon fence & orange / white plastic barrier, sanitized by removal of collapsed spire & tower rubble, the tower was a stony stump. The rose window, west wall was supported by rusty steel girders, a waste of money. The girders were supposed to support the west wall, but instead were a "battering ram," destroying the rose window & west wall during the June 13 quake. The west wall should've been demolished soon after collapse in the June 13 quake. Cathedral south, nave wall & transept walls had boarded windows. Below stood a line of shipping containers, a barrier against aftershocks.

The snag with cordon fencing placement was that public couldn't see the north side of Christchurch Cathedral properly. What was CERA hiding?

26.11.11. Abandoned, fence cordoned, serial quake trashed, deconsecrated Christchurch Cathedral, Cathedral Sq, CBD red zone

26.11.11. Abandoned, cordoned, serial quake trashed, deconsecrated Christchurch Cathedral & CERA's tourist bus, Cathedral Sq, CBD red zone

26.11.11. Fence cordoned cop kiosk, Cathedral Sq, CBD red zone. Abandoned MFL, Forsyth Barr, Price Waterhouse Cooper, Camelot Hotel behind. Most bldgs in the pic would be demolished except the cop kiosk & Forsyth Barr

Like the northern angel statue by Christchurch Cathedral, the southern Chalice survived the quakes, intact.

26.11.11. CBD red zone, Cathedral Sq view to the Chalice & Colombo St south. BNZ left, to be demolished & ANZ right to be demolished

Tall, dusty bldgs loured around Cathedral Sq, all closed, red zoned, abandoned.

Ghosts.

26.11.11. Abandoned, fence cordoned, serial quake trashed, deconsecrated Christchurch Cathedral, Cathedral Sq, CBD red zone. Abandoned Millennium Hotel right

Why did CERA take so long letting citizens see their beloved Christchurch Cathedral? CERA had insulted citizens with a 9 months ban, then came up with sleazy bus tours in CERA's forbidden CBD, after insurers went on settlement go-slows for Christchurch rebuild.

26.11.11. Abandoned, fence cordoned, serial quake trashed, deconsecrated Christchurch Cathedral, Cathedral Sq, CBD red zone. Abandoned Millennium Hotel right

Months ago, Cathedral Sq access for citizens could easily have been established from Worcester St Bridge. If that was the way CERA worked, obstructing citizens, its dictatorship was dire.

26.11.11. CBD red zone, Cathedral Sq view of Worcester Blvd. Southern Encounters & Regent Theatre demolition site left. Clarendon Tower awaiting demolition beyond

26.11.11. Abandoned, fence cordoned, serial quake trashed, deconsecrated Christchurch Cathedral, Cathedral Sq, CBD red zone

At the time of writing, 26.11.11, many orange zone, Southshore & CBD citizens & white zone Port Hills citizens still waited for CERA to decide whether their residential properties would be green zone or red zone. Lives were in limbo while CERA dithered about land. 6 000 red zone houses would be demolished in red zone suburbs (The Press).

Ghosts.

Two years later, Nov 2013, some red zoned, Port Hills properties & bare land properties, still awaited review of their zoning &  / or Crown settlements by CERA, as CERA dragged its jackboots by appealing a High Court decision, which had ruled CERA's red zoning of residential properties was unlawful.

26.11.11. South transept boarded windows & shipping containers, deconsecrated Christchurch Cathedral, Cathedral Sq, CBD red zone. Pacific Tower (Rendezvous Hotel) behind was repaired

Mon 28.11.11. The Press reported that 10 500 citizens visited Cathedral Sq on Saturday & 10 000 citizens visited on Sunday.

CERA needed to speed up demolitions & rebuild, so that citizens got their CBD back again. CERA needed to sort out insurers' delays. The Australian govt had shown the way by setting a time limit for insurance settlements after Brisbane flooding.

Sat 03.12.11. I returned to Cathedral Sq so Leah could see Christchurch Cathedral ghosts:

I parked on St Asaph St again by McKenzie Willis demolition site.

Images, quake damaged Colombo St:

03.12.11. Colombo St demolition sites view of red zone high rises: Westpac, to be demolished, Hotel Grand Chancellor, being demolished, Holiday Inn, awaiting demolition. Old Council bldg right, Tuam St, would make way for the permanent bus exchange

Colombo St: By a demolition site car park, on a quake damaged wall I snapped a "Greening the Rubble" sign. Many Christchurch quake demolition sites were weedy, not a good look for anal fixaters, but great for biologists seeing plant succession, starting with hardy pioneer weeds & grasses.

Leah enjoyed Ballantynes Xmas display windows.

There were fewer citizens on Cathedral Sq walkway than last Saturday's crowd. Ryan Security was more efficient with plastic pole lanes at Cashel Mall entrance to Colombo St. A red tent canopy stood at the entrance to stop Ryan Security brains frying in the sun. CERA's walkway rules sign, which had been on a cordon fence obscuring Cashel St view, was attached to another entrance fence.

03.12.11. CERA beggar bucket, Cathedral Sq walkway entrance, The Crossing, cnr Colombo St / Cashel Mall

By the entrance a white plastic, CERA beggar-bucket stood on a white table A sign read:

YOU ARE INVITED TO MAKE A
GOLD COIN CONTRIBUTION TOWARDS
THE COST OF THE CBD RED ZONE
         PUBLIC ACCESS VISITS HERE

More CERA beggar signs hung on Cathedral Sq fence cordon.

Insulting, as citizens were banned from Cathedral Sq for 9 months since the Feb 22 quake & were "invited" to pay for a CERA apartheid privilege of seeing Cathedral Sq quake ruins, behind strangling, red zone cordon fences. Like family of an executed man "invited" to pay for the executioner's garotte.

CERA's beggar-bucket stank more than rotten food, take away shops lining garotte fencing on Colombo St.

Quake apartheid Christchurch was alive & well, CERA style. CERA had keys to its own apartheid mad house. Citizens were banned. Since last weekend CERA had hung many laminated signs (some with pics) on fence cordons. By abandoned Burger King fence cordon, a CERA sign read:

Burger King
This building
will remain. [It was demolished].

24 hour dairy
This building will be demolished, and is likely to
be gone by Christmas.

Ghosts.

A CERA sign on KFC fence cordon read:

Milano Building

and their insurance
company.

KFC

This building on Colombo and High Streets has been deemed uneconomic to repair.
The demolition will begin early in the new year.

relocated from the corner of Tuam and
Manchester Streets, as part of plans to reduce
the cordon.

Ha! CERA fence cordons stayed for years in the CBD & residential red zones.

On one of the porta-cabins another CERA sign read:

CERA
CANTERBURY EARTHQUAKE
RECOVERY AUTHORITY

OPERATIONS PROJECT MANAGEMENT OFFICE

CERA had turned Cathedral Sq into a theme park. CERA, far removed from the hell of suburban quake squalor, made themselves comfortable in CERA occupied CBD. Lovely to have offices in Cathedral Sq, protected by NZDF cordons & checkpoints, without scrutiny by ratepayers & taxpayers.

CERA demolition dictatorship ruled: Lord Muck, Isaacs, demolitions dictator, ensconsed himself in Cathedral Sq, Demolition HQ, citizens excluded. How long would it take CERA to leave, for citizens to have their Cathedral Sq again? Having lived under dictators in apartheid SA, I expected CERA dictators would leave, either sick, or kicking & screaming.

CERA boss Sutton left whining, under a cloud, at the end of 2014, accused by female staff of abuse. His sidekick Isaacs soon left to become Stonewood Homes CEO, after screwing up the red zone CBD with CERA's Blueprint.

A gibberish sign on a St Asaph St cordon fence read:

ARE YOU...
Looking4rentals.co.nz
IS LOOKING 4 PROPERTIES
Are you... looking 4 customised management
Are you... looking 4 better rental returns

That sort of vampire advertising sprang up on cordon fencing post quakes, where businesses wanted to make a fast buck from Christchurch citizens. A post quake housing crisis would evolve in Christchurch, CERA minister Brownlee would deny it. When we left Christchurch in June 2014, we experienced rental greed from our landlords & their "customised management" by Harcourts, in cahoots with NZ govt, Tenancy Tribunal, to steal our rental bond money. But that's another story...

St Asaph St, McKenzie Willis demolition site: Salvaged wooden floor pile, a heap of twisted, rusty reinforcement iron, by the red zone, cordon fence, with a SOUTHERN DEMOLITION sign:

TRESPASSERS
     WILL BE
PROSECUTED

I doubted Southern Demolition owned that site, just used it as a salvage yard, making a dump & dust pollution. Never mind 1 000s of commuters passing the site weekly, having to breath in Southern Demolition dust pollution. With CERA's apartheid decrees, there would more nasty signs & sleazy health hazards in quake apartheid Christchurch.

Fourteen months post 7.1 mag, 04.09.10 quake & 9 months post 6.3 mag, 22.02.11 quake & 5 months post 6.3 mag, 13.06.11 quake, although there were risks of aftershocks, amidst dangerous death trap bldgs still, 1 000s of citizens wandering Cathedral Sq walkway, showed citizens needed their CBD back again.

But CERA would take years to realize that. Meanwhile Christchurch CBD would be ghost land with strangling, red zone cordon fences, guarded by NZDF checkpoints.

After the second weekend, The Press reported that 40 000 citizens had already wandered Cathedral Sq walkway. CERA opened the walkway for another 2 weekends.

Considering all the old bldgs that quake collapsed in the CBD & modern bldgs that failed & ongoing demolitions, there were obviously hundreds of badly constructed / badly quake strengthened bldgs in the pre-quake CBD. So much for business acumen, architecture design & state of the arts engineering, construction & safety.

Post 23.12.11 quake swarm damage to Christchurch Cathedral, it was decided Christchurch Cathedral would be demolished. But Christchurch Cathedral demolition / restoration wasn't finished yet. Long story.

Coda: Sun 14.02.16. Valentines Day, 5.7 may quake. Christchurch Cathedral's western facade crumbled more, despite the so-called, steel "Battering Ram" buttressing the facade.
