Cranmer Centre Demolition, Christchurch Quake

14.04.11. National State of Emergency. Post Feb 22, magnitude 6.3 quake, Christchurch Civil Defence had an ever expanding list of bldgs demolished & needing demolition, for various reasons - hundreds of bldgs.

Images, quake damaged Montreal St:

Pity the will to make bldgs safe was not shown pre quakes, as people died. Future Christchurch bldgs should be build to withstand future earthquakes, without causing fatalities. The technology was there. Planners, surveyors, architects, drawing offices, engineers, builders, Councils & NZ govt needed to pull finger!

Post Feb 22 quake, whenever I wandered around Christchurch I saw new demolition sites & bldgs being demolished. Civil Defence used Weapons of Mass Destruction like demolition excavators, diggers, cranes, front end loaders, massive clawed machines to rip bldgs apart.

Civil Defence lackeys were NZDF soldiers & cops, used to keep owners & public away from bldgs being demolished behind cordon fences. The National State of Emergency was used to prevent owners & public from stopping demolitions. All for public safety of course.

14.04.11. I wandered down Montreal St from zone 4 into zone 1 & briefly coolpixed demolition of old brick Cranmer Centre, damaged by the Sept 4 quake, trashed by the Feb 22 quake. As I feared asbestos dust, brick dust & cement dust, I didn't stay long, as one digger produced dust clouds while making a rubble heap.

Gotta ask why demolishers didn't wet rubble to stop dust? Hosing down with water was simple. Never mind health hazards to demolition operators & locals. I'd witness demolishers' slack attitudes to public & worker health & safety many times over the next few years.

Later, Armagh St section of Cranmer Centre was demolished too. The demolition site became a car park for the Cathedral Office.
