Cantabrians Unite Protest & Post Quakes Super Moon

Noon, Sun 06.05.12. Post Quakes super moon, a perigee moon close to the earth, must've affected The Press reporter, Sam Sachdeva's counting ability. Maybe 400 was tough for his little mind to count?

My protest crowd guesstimate: There was about 1000 people at the Cantabrians Unite protest, corner Montreal / Hereford St. Close up pics of a bit of the crowd was biased reporting Sachdeva.

Never mind pedestrian passersby & for 2 hours during the protest, cars going by, stopping at Montreal St traffic lights, some cars even stopping at the protest. I noticed one elegant woman stop her car on Hereford St, sign a protest petition & move on. Buses stopped on Hereford St too, disgorging passengers during the protest. They were at the protest Sachdeva.

During the Feb protest there were cop cordons blocking traffic. There were no Hereford St / Montreal St cop cordons on Sunday. Never mind nearby bldg residents, coffee shop patrons, hidden cops at nearby Central Police & listeners in Christchurch Council bldg Sachdeva.

Good on Peter Lynch, Hugh Paveltich & Co doing something about dysfunctional Council. CERA, insurers, EQC, contactors & lawyers gobbling at the trough of quake despond.

Before the protest, I parked my car at Chester St West & snapped a queue of poor & homeless being fed at Cranmer Sq by Korean Daniel Chung & family. Some of those people were at the protest.

1 Jan 2013, New Year awards: Chung was honoured, services to the community.

Across Armagh St, on Cranmer Centre demolition site, I snapped Christchurch Cathedral Office, with an angel statue attached to the first floor balcony & pallets of bricks, old & new slate tiles & cathedral stones behind fencing.

At the protest I wandered the crowd & snapped protesting people, dogs & news hounds sniffing.

I signed a petition asking for 100% rates relief for red zoners. Why pay rates for no water, no sewage, no electricity, no telecom service, no rubbish collection, crap road services, on govt decreed, red zone, uninsurable, unliveable houses?

Not all red zoners & TC3 green zoners used public libraries, many closed & public pools, many closed. And many were battling to pay mortgages, insurances, rates on red zone houses, in addition to being quake displaced & paying exorbitant rents to greedy landlords.

Never mind proposed 7.5% rates increase, above inflation, by overpaid, town clerk Marryatt & quake trashed, home owners' battles with EQC, Fletcher, insurers & enduring SCIRT botch-ups.

And critics of the protest felt there was nothing to protest about!

A pretty woman gave me a HOUSING PROTEST leaflet. The protest would be at CERA minister Brownlee's Ilam electorate office, Greers Rd, 2 pm, Sat 26 May.

After the protest, I wandered back to my car & saw 2 signs stuck on a Montreal St wall, near the closed Art Gallery:

     NO THANKS.

     WE LIVE IN
SUPER LUNATIC
          TIMES

Tue 08.05.12. The Press reported that mayor Parker & inept councillors would get a 1.5% pay rise. A slap in the face for ratepayers, expected to pay 7.5% rates rise. Would Parker & councillors refuse that lunacy?

Tue 08.05.12. TV news interviewed some Brooklands residents who were at the protest. Although Brooklands suburb was entirely red zoned by CERA, who reckoned it was so quake damaged it must be wiped off the map, some protesters differed with that secretly arrived at govt / CERA decree (geotech reports were unavailable for the public) & were opting to stay in Brooklands, as they would lose equity if they left.

So much for PM Key's promise that Cantabrians would not be worse off post quakes. On 23.02.11, a day after the fatal 22.02.11 quake PM Key promised in a speech:

Progress is certain, things will get better, Christchurch will rise again. On behalf of the Government let me be clear that no one will be left to walk this journey alone. New Zealand will walk this journey with you. We will be there every step of the way. Christchurch, this is not your test, this is New Zealand's test. I promise you we will meet this test.

Although there were youngsters at the 2 Cantabrians Unite protests I attended, most protestors were baby boomers, the Kiwi generation handed largesse on a welfare state plate: free tertiary education, munificent benefits, like unemployment, DPB, cheap medicals, state pension, state housing, rent allowance... & the expectation that annual hordes of immigrants would pay for NZ govt investments, welfare state & Waitangi settlements & bring in overseas sourced expertise & productivity.

Although the inflated housing market for Kiwi youngsters & immigrants, like myself, was almost impossible to enter, Kiwi baby boomers whined about quake destruction, home investment equity, Council ineptness, yet had never experienced big moral challenges like apartheid, terrorism for decades, civil war, conscription & local govt manipulation by central govt.

The last item was happening in post quake Christchurch, with govt appointed Crown managers in ECAN & elected managers booted out by National govt, to enable National govt to pollute Canterbury Plains underground & surface water with cow shit from intensive dairy farming & pollute pure underground water with fracking chemicals.

As an immigrant baby boomer I sympathised with protesters, but pitied them. Given their whinging, it seemed the biggest challenges they'd had in life were paying off pre & post quake mortgages, insurance negotiations & enduring incompetent local govt.

11.05.12. The Press reported deputy mayor Button saying that councillors needed to trust the CBD rebuild consortium. The newly formed, lunatic consortium was announced to be local Boffa Miskell consultants bossing overseas consultant firms Populous & Woods Bagot; local brutalist architect firm Warren & Mahoney, designers of extremely ugly, modern bldgs like Crowne Plaza Hotel & the Convention Centre, post quake demolished; Shepphard & Rout architects & RCP construction firm.

Consortium snag: They were happy to accept $1m+ for a Blueprint to rebuild on quake-crapped, CBD swampland - liquefactioned to hell, riverbanks subsiding, over 1 000 CBD bldgs demolished post quakes. Pity the consortium didn't have the wits to Blueprint a new CBD on quake safer land.

In the W past the airport, Russley Rd four-laning was being constructed & safe Hornby was booming with imminent extensions to Hornby mall.

Like EQC, CERA became another jackboot, govt dept, wallowing in delays & obstructions, hiding behind cordon fences, protected by NZDF soldier checkpoints, with an us versus them mentality. If CERA wanted a swift CBD rebuild, it would've formed the $1m+ consortium months ago.

Inept Council continued bread & circus trumpeting new, prestige buildings, like a Convention Centre & 35 000 seater, roofed rugby stadium, while red zoners dossed in quake crapped houses & white zoners still awaited CERA land zoning. The April 2013 deadline loomed for leaving red zone housing & insurers still delayed pay outs.

Weekend Press 12-13.05.12. While mayor Parker swanned overseas again, deputy mayor Button presided over an inept Council & crown observer, silenced councillors, who CERA minister Brownlee had threatened in January with "Shape up or ship out," before the Feb protest by 4 000 ratepayers.

Tue 15.05.12, 1.27 pm, 4.5 mag quake, 11 km depth, 10 km NE of Christchurch (Geonet). Shook our Burnside house with a long rumbling. Rattled my pc while I read Facebook.

Closer to the epicentre, Leah said her London St school shook & 2 seven year olds started crying. Not having big quakes for a while, we wondered if quakes had ceased, or wondered when the next big quake would strike? Quake anxiety.

Luke further west at Hornby, didn't feel the quake at all, as he was on his feet operating a spindle moulding machine at Southern Pine Products. How one felt or responded to a smallish quake depended on one's proximity to the epicentre, depth of quake & whether one was active or not.
