Pallet Pavilion & Junk Art Around Christchurch Cathedral Ruin

Saturday afternoon, 06.07.13. Leah & I wanted to see live music & new art in Cathedral Square. Since NZDF soldiers had left the red zone cordon last week, after occupying Christchurch CBD for 28 months post 22.02.11 quake & although there were still many cordon fences around bldgs & across streets in the CBD, citizens went back to the CBD to see demolition sites & abandoned bldgs & Restart Cashel Mall shops & some reopened New Regent St shops. The rest of the CBD was zombie land, a few shops & bars opened on the borders of the former red zone CBD.

As we'd done last weekend, we wanted to walk across Colombo St Bridge to Victoria Sq. No luck. Cordon fences across Colombo St blocked our way by abandoned Town Hall. So much for CERA's trumpeted removal of cordon fencing.

We wandered along Kilmore St to Pallet Pavilion. Leah stood in front of Town Hall front door for the first time since the 22.02.11 quake. It was still fence cordoned, awaiting repairs, but shipping container barriers were gone.

A flea market traded at Pallet Pavilion. Stacked, blue pallets were a wind break for customers sitting on pallets chomping food & drinks bought at a refreshment stall & trailer shops. Leah liked the new, wooden, relocatable Arcades going down to Victoria Sq.

We wandered to Victoria Sq, abandoned Town Hall still fence cordoned awaiting repairs. One could approach the floral clock at last 28 months post quake, but it still wasn't working properly.

I liked standing on Victoria Bridge (repaired in 2016) & looking downstream Avon River to Colombo St Bridge (still cordoned) & upstream to Armagh St Bridge, open for pedestrian traffic.

Bordering Victoria Sq: Craigs House was gone, demolished & abandoned Victoria Square apartments awaited demolition for NZ govt's / CCDU's Blueprint Convention Centre. Abandoned Copthorne Hotel awaited demolition. Forsyth Barr awaited repairs for "new" Crowne Plaza Hotel. The National Bank / Isaac House was abandoned opposite Forsyth Barr. Abandoned hotels, like Millennium Hotel, stayed in the CBD hoping tourism would restart.

The longer the Anglican Church delayed rebuilding Christchurch Cathedral & the longer the Crown delayed building CCDU's Convention Centre the longer it would take for hotels to flourish. As CBD hotels would benefit from Christchurch Cathedral tourism & Convention Centre clients, why didn't CBD hotels contribute to rebuild Christchurch Cathedral & contribute to the Convention Centre build?

Gloucester St west was closed by abandoned Central Library awaiting demolition for NZ govt's / CCDU's Blueprint Convention Centre. CERA's / SCIRT's street closures & detours happened all over Christchurch. One week a street was open, the next closed / detoured for months.

People wandered Cathedral Sq looking at junk art, where artists had covered cordon fencing around ruined Christchurch Cathedral with bright geometric designs on a black background. They'd stuck 1 000s of coloured plastic squares, forming more geometric designs, into cordon fence wires, bordering abandoned bldgs around Cathedral Sq.

Incongruously, a whare shed was covered in vegetation, plonked in front of the cordon fence before the ruined western facade of Christchurch Cathedral. An A frame echo of the quake trashed western facade, a Maori version of the Wizard wittering to ghost crowds.

It was all tacky, garish colours, like curry powder in a bazaar. Instead of fixing quake trashed roads, Council paid artists for junk art, dumbing down Christchurch citizens. More insulting were gaps in the arty fence, with steel gates & steel mesh, for citizens to stare at ruined Chriostchurch Cathedral, like monkeys in a cage.

Deconsecrated Christchurch Cathedral was a dangerous ruin behind junk art. If it were safe, there would be no need for steel bracing, window boards, cordon fencing & shipping container barriers.

New boards on Cathedral Sq described historic topics, like Christchurch transport, also incongruous, as there was only foot traffic in Cathedral Sq. Board headings:

JOURNEY CENTRAL.

THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT (Propaganda, NZ govt, National party slogan: A BRIGHTER FUTURE).

A VAST CHANGING CANVAS.

TOGETHER, TO GATHER.

As most bldgs were abandoned & cordoned around Cathedral Sq, we wouldn't return for a while.

  1. Sad :( Yes not EVERYTHING has to be covered in contemporary art. Respect.

    Cheers
