Monday 13.09.10. Day 10 after Christchurch Quake, Colombo St, Beckenham & Sydenham

Monday 13.09.10. State of Emergency. Day 10 after Christchurch Quake: Colombo Street, Beckenham & Sydenham.

Christchurch quake state of emergency was continued to Wednesday 15.09.10. I drove Luke to his bldg site work at Riverlaw Tce, St Martins. Riverlaw Tce was quake cracked due to riverbank slumping / lateral spreading. Workmen using earth moving machines were repairing roadside pipes.

Images, quake damaged Riverlaw Tce & Fifield Tce:

I drove to Colombo Street as I wanted see quake damage at Beckenham & Sydenham. We often went to South Library, Beckenham. Luke's girlfriend lost her job when the quake destroyed Simo's Moroccan Restaurant, Beckenham, where she'd worked. Several old & new Beckenham bldgs were damaged by the quake. (Simo's Moroccan Restaurant relocated to Lincoln Rd).

A fence cordoned shop window near Simo's Moroccan Restaurant was boarded. A spray-painted message on the board read:

SORRY CLOSED
ENQUIRIES 2 FRED...

The quake trashed bldgs were soon demolished.

13.09.10. Quake damaged Sydenham Heritage Church, cnr Brougham St / Colombo St, Sydenham, state of emergency. Tarp was replaced by a temp wooden cap. Sydenham Heritage Church was demolished in the national state of emergency post 22.02.11 quake. Demolition rubble polluted the site for years

I backtracked down Colombo St to Sydenham, as media for the last state of emergency week had warned about Sydenham's quake damages. I crossed Brougham St / Colombo St crossing & parked at Elgin St by Sydenham WINZ office. A sign on Sydenham WINZ's glass door read:

THIS OFFICE IS
CLOSED UNTIL THE 13th
OF SEPTEMBER

If required, please
go to Work and
Income at Linwood,
Riccarton, Hornby
or New Brighton

Pre quakes, we'd dealt with my temporary job losses & dole at Sydenham WINZ office, so Sydenham earthquake damages were symbols of hard times, degradation, unemployment, low income & business malaise.

A female cop, arms folded, & two male NZDF soldiers, at ease, guarded Elgin St / Colombo St cordon, which fenced off, quake trashed bldgs on both sides of one-way cordoned Colombo St.

In the distance several blocks away, I saw a lone NZDF soldier guarding the end of the cordon before Moorhouse Ave railway & road bridges.

24.10.10. Another big, rumbly aftershock, 4.8 magnitude, while I typed: shook my chair, computer table & computer screen. Leah said our kitchen fridge shook & things rattled on top.

Images, quake damaged Colombo St, Sydenham:

Colombo St, Sydenham, was usually a narrow, busy, two-way street. The cordon's high, metal fences & dark, brick buildings made Colombo St claustrophobic, with quake damaged bldgs, red stickered on both sides of Colombo St, from Elgin St, past Wordsworth St & beyond to Sandyford St near Moorhouse Ave.

Given the quake destruction, one-way traffic weaving along Colombo St was strange, as traffic rumble would increase damage to unstable bldgs.

24.10.10. Seven weeks post quake that section of Colombo St was still one-way, with traffic slowly weaving past fences & plastic barrier cordons from Elgin St to Carlyle St, with few shops reopened, cops & NZDF soldiers long gone. Quake debris still lay on Colombo St & pavements.

So change came slowly to lower socio-economic Sydenham. I wondered why heritage fanatics weren't organizing work parties to remove quake debris & doing something positive about rebuild? In contrast, post Sept 4 quake, university students volunteered to dig tons of liquefaction silt away from damaged areas all over Christchurch.

Alone, I walked Sydenham cordon, alert for aftershocks & falling debris. It was damp & overcast. For the first time since leaving SA 15 years ago, I felt menace I'd felt for years during states of emergencies in SA. During apartheid, SA state was as much to blame as the ANC, APLA & Inkatha for terror we endured during 1980s-1990s so-called states of emergencies, before we emigrated to NZ.

Comparing NZ / SA state of emergencies, the novelty of Christchurch quaking, relatively small bldg & infrastructure damages & my choice of putting myself in danger of aftershocks, unstable bldgs & falling masonry or not, was kindergarten stuff compared to the terrifying uncertainty during SA years of ANC / APLA / Inkatha / state mayhem:

Klipgooi; arbitrary necklacings; murderous crimes & rapes; border land mines & bombings & AK47 attacks on civilian targets like buses, trains, pubs, restaurants, churches, shopping malls, state bldgs & infrastructure like oil refineries; arbitrary roadblocks all over SA; protest marches; riots; industrial mayhem & lethal, unionised work stoppages...

Every bldg in Colombo St, Sydenham cordon was deserted. Only signs of life were me coolpixing, cops & NZDF soldiers at cordon ends, gulls perching on parapets, traffic lights winking & erratic traffic going past fences in the one-way cordon, en route to Moorhouse Ave.

When I reached the end of the cordon, I walked back to Wordsworth St where I'd entered a break in the cordon fence. A young man entered the cordon at the break, vaulted the next cordon fence & vanished down Colombo St.

A fat man & a thin man entered the cordon, both carrying full bags. One asked whether it was possible to get through the cordon. "Nah," I said, "There're cops & soldiers at both ends of the cordon." They about-turned & skedaddled. I wondered what was in their bags?

A young woman with a camera sneaked into the cordon. When she realized she was alone, she scuttled along the cordon fence, her footsteps clattering along Colombo St.

I drove to Kilmore St as I wanted to see quake damaged, cleaned up Repertory Theatre, then drove to Northlands Pak 'n Save as I wanted to see quake effects on supermarket shopping.

Avon River bank trees by Cambridge Tce had WARNING WATER CONTAMINATED signs, as quakes had sewage polluted Christchurch rivers.

13.09.10. Quake damaged, cleaned up Repertory Theatre, Kilmore St, state of emergency. Repertory Theatre & Markhams were demolished post 22.02.11. quake

Above the fence cordoned Repertory Theatre door a production advert read:

NOISES OFF!!

An orange digger was parked in front of boarded & broken Repertory Theatre, ready for action. As I'd spent much time during my SA student & teaching years acting in plays & directing plays, it was sad to see Repertory Theatre so damaged. John Cleese opined: Arts rubbed up others. Post quake Christchurch endured politicians, councillors & lackeys rubbing up Cantabrians for years.

The CBD was quickly cleaned up post quake. Repairs moot. Quake damaged, outer suburbs like Sydenham rotted in the spring sun: with a couple more days of cops & NZDF soldiers on standoff, cordon duty, during the extended state of emergency. Nothing else went on.

My first impression of different clean up efforts by Christchurch City Council was confirmed six weeks later when I returned to quake damaged Colombo St, Sydenham. Quake debris was still there. No demolitions. No rebuilds. Cosmetic reshuffling of cordon fences & plastic barriers on Colombo St were the only changes between Elgin St & Carlyle St crossings on Colombo St, Sydenham.

Sydenham's Colombo St northbound traffic was still one-way. Traffic from Moorhouse Ave, CBD side was detoured, thus starving Sydenham of business. Considering quick clean ups, demolitions, repairs & rebuilding going on elsewhere in Christchurch, the contrast between neglected Sydenham & other suburbs was startling.

Two months post quake it was announced another shopping mall would be built in the northern suburbs, Styx Mill area, a kick in the crotch for quake dying Sydenham.

04.12.10. Exactly 3 months post quake I drove up Colombo St, two-way again, livelier, but still shattered with fence cordoned, damaged & demolished bldgs. Debris was cleared & a big block of bldgs was demolished on the corner of Colombo St & Sandyford St where Angus Donaldson bldg had stood, leaving an empty, fenced site. Since the quake I'd seen many empty, fenced sites after demolitions in central Christchurch.

A year post 04.09.10 quake, most Beckenham & Sydenham ruins on Colombo St, mentioned in this post were demolished. Just empty demolition sites left, growing weeds, some sites fence cordoned. Wastelands waiting for recovery. June 2013 ditto - rebuild stalled in Sydenham.
