Monday 13 September 2010. Darfield Quake. Day 10. Colombo Street, Beckenham, Sydenham focus. State-of-Emergency would continue to Wednesday 15 September 2010. I drove Luke to his building-site work at Riverlaw Tce, St Martins.
Riverlaw Tce: Cracked due to Heathcote River bank-slumping / lateral-spreading. Workmen used earthmoving machines to repair roadside- pipes. Heathcote River was turbid due to sewage-pollution from broken-pipes.

I drove to Colombo Street, wanting to see damage at Beckenham & Sydenham. We often visited South Library, Beckenham.
Colombo St, Beckenham: Luke's girlfriend lost her job when the quake destroyed Simo's Moroccan Restaurant, where she'd worked. Several old & new Beckenham buildings were damaged. (Simo's Moroccan Restaurant would relocate to Lincoln Rd).
A steel-mesh-fence-cordoned shop-window near two-storey, Simo's Moroccan Restaurant ghost was boarded. Spray-painted message on the board:
SORRY CLOSED
ENQUIRIES 2 FRED...
Simo's brick-parapet was fallen, also the brick-parapet at the end of the row of red-stickered, USAR / TF graffitied, plastic-taped, orange-road-coned; fence-cordoned, ghost-shops. Upper storey "dolls house" rooms gaped below the broken-parapets. NO GO yellow, spray-painted on roadside windows. SORRY CLOSED black, spray-painted on a boarded-window. Brick-rubble lay on the road inside the steel-mesh-fence-cordon. Across the road & nearby Nando's modern buildings were undamaged.
Further down Colombo St, more two-storey ghosts, red-stickered, steel-mesh-fence-cordoned, windows spray-painted with red & orange warnings: BUILDING UNSAFE KEEP OUT (threwthekeyhole ghost). BUY BUY BABY ghost, wooden one-storey, at the end of the brick shop row, was tilted, as the quake had shifted it from its neighbour. Ghosts both sides of Colombo St would be demolished.

Demo site still vacant.
Media for the last State-of-Emergency week warned about Sydenham damages: Colombo St / Brougham St: Sydenham Heritage Church ghost, greystone gable toppled, tarped, steel-mesh-fence-cordoned. Tarp would be replaced with a wooden, triangular cap over gable-damage. Sydenham Heritage Church would be demolished in the National State-of-Emergency post 22 February 2011 quake. Demolition-rubble would pollute the site for years, only cleared away in 2019. 2023. Demolition-site still vacant.
Colombo St / Elgin St: Steel-mesh-fence-cordons down both sides of Colombo St. 30 km/h speed-limit signs were at the start of both fence-cordons. I would see many more 30 km/h speed-limit signs over the next three quake years. I parked at Elgin St by multi-storey, WINZ ghost. Sydenham WINZ's glass-door sign:
THIS OFFICE IS
CLOSED UNTIL THE 13th
OF SEPTEMBER
If required, please
go to Work and
Income at Linwood,
Riccarton, Hornby
or New Brighton
By christiansuperstore, a female cop, arms folded, two male NZDF soldiers, at ease & cop-car guarded the steel-mesh-fence-cordons, by brick ghosts both sides of one-way-cordoned Colombo St. Several blocks away, another NZDF soldier guarded the end of the steel-mesh-fence cordon before Moorhouse Ave railway & overbridges.
13.09.10. 30 km/h speed limit. Quake state of emergency, steel mesh fence cordon, Elgin St / Colombo St by WINZ Sydenham office. Sydenham WINZ would be closed post 22.02.11 quake, later demolished for a rebuild

Colombo St, Sydenham: Usually a narrow, busy, two-way street. The steel-mesh-fence-cordon & dark, brick-ghosts made Colombo St claustrophobic: ghosts red-stickered both sides of Colombo St, from Elgin St, past Wordsworth St & beyond to Sandyford St near Moorhouse Ave. Given destruction, one-way traffic weaving along Colombo St between cordon-fences was strange, as traffic-rumble would increase damage to unstable-buildings.
Colombo St / Wordsworth St: Two-storey, Ascot TV ghost, brick-parapet, brick-walls peeled off "dolls house" second-storey rooms, rubble on footpath, steel-mesh-fence-cordoned. Ascot TV business would soon relocate. Ascot TV would be demolished post 22 February 2011 quake.

13.09.10. Quake trashed Ascot TV rooms & roof, Wordsworth St / Colombo St, state of emergency cordon. 5 months post quake, bldg still as is. Demolished post 22.02.11 quake
Colombo St: Alone, I trekked Sydenham-cordon, alert for aftershocks & falling debris. It was damp, overcast. I felt creepy again. Comparing NZ / SA States-of-Emergencies, the novelty of Christchurch quaking, damages, unstable-buildings, aftershocks, was paltry compared to the terrifying uncertainty during SA years of ANC / APLA / Inkatha / state mayhem.
13.09.10. Quake trashed, red stickered, Bali Hai Imports Ltd, Colombo St, state of emergency cordon. Demolished post 22.02.11 quake
13.09.10. Quake trashed, red stickered, Bali Hai Imports Ltd, Colombo St, state of emergency cordon. Demolished post 22.02.11 quake
13.09.10. Quake trashed bldgs, Colombo St, state of emergency cordon. Demolished post 22.02.11 quake
Every brick-building in Colombo St, Sydenham cordon was deserted. Only signs of life were me, cops & NZDF soldiers at cordon-ends, gulls perching on parapets, traffic-lights winking, erratic traffic going past fences in the one-way-cordon, en-route to Moorhouse Ave.
Colombo St / Battersea St: Churchills Tavern ghost, plastic-tape; steel-mesh-fence-cordoned; brick-parapets, awnings collapsed; debris, rubble on pavement. Churchills Tavern would be demolished post 22 February 2011 quake.

Colombo St / Sandyford St: Two-storey, brick-shop row, including Penny Lane Records ghost: fallen-brick side-wall; fallen-brick parapet, awnings; rubble, debris on footpath, steel-mesh-fence-cordoned. Angus Donaldson Printers ghost: second-storey, brick-walls peeled off showing "dolls house" rooms; debris, rubble on footpath. Angus Donaldson Printers would be demolished, but would relocate further up Colombo St, sharing premises with relocated Penny Lane Music.
13.09.10. Quake trashed Penny Lane Records (soon relocated) Colombo St, state of emergency cordon. Demolished post 22.02.11 quake
13.09.10. Quake trashed Penny Lane Records & shops, Colombo St, state of emergency cordon. Demolished post 22 .02.11 quake
13.09.10. Quake debris, Colombo St / Sandyford St, Sydenham, state of emergency cordon. Cnr bldg, Angus Donaldson, soon demolished
Colombo St: From the cordon-end, I trekked back to Wordsworth St crossing, where I'd entered a break in the steel-mesh-fence-cordon. A young man entered the cordon at the break, vaulted the next cordon-fence & vanished down Colombo St.
A fat man & a thin man entered the cordon, both carrying bags. One asked whether it was possible to get through the cordon. "Nah," I said, "There're cops & soldiers at cordon-ends." They about-turned, skedaddled. What was in their bags?
A young woman with a camera sneaked into the cordon. When she realized she was alone, she scuttled along the cordon-fence, her footsteps clattering along Colombo St.
13.09.10. Gull on an acid rain, quake trashed Colombo St roof, Sydenham, state of emergency cordon. Detached facade ready to fall

I drove down one-way Colombo St & parked near Sandyford St by the end of the steel-mesh-fence-cordon, where I'd turned back while walking the cordon, so I could snap more ghosts between Sandyford St & Carlyle St closer to the railway bridge & Moorhouse Ave.

13.09.10. Orange digger behind steel mesh fence cordon. Quake damaged, cleaned up Repertory Theatre, Kilmore St, state of emergency. Repertory Theatre & Markhams would be demolished post 22.02.11. quake
Kilmore St: Repertory Theatre ghost, second-storey, brick-wall peeled off. An orange-digger was parked behind the steel-mesh-fence- cordon after debris clean-up. Above the theatre front-door, production advertisement:
NOISES OFF!!
Repertory Theatre would be demolished post 22 February 2011 quake.
The CBD was quickly cleaned up post-quake. Repairs moot. Damaged outer suburbs like Sydenham rotted in the spring sun: couple more days of cops, NZDF soldiers on cordon-duty, during the extended State-of-Emergency.
24.10.10. Another big, rumbly aftershock, M4.8, while I typed: shook my computer-table & monitor. Leah said our fridge shook, things rattling on top.
My first impression of clean-ups by Christchurch City Council was confirmed six weeks later when I returned to Colombo St, Sydenham. Debris was still there. Why didn't Heritage-hailers organize work-parties to remove debris? No demolitions. No rebuilds. Few reopened shops. Cops, NZDF soldiers gone.
Cosmetic reshuffling of cordon-fences & plastic-barriers on Colombo St were the only changes between Elgin St & Carlyle St crossings. Colombo St northbound traffic was still one-way, weaving past cordon-fences & ghost-shops. Traffic from Moorhouse Ave, CBD side was detoured, thus starving Sydenham business. Considering quick clean-ups, demolitions, repairs & rebuilds elsewhere in Christchurch, contrast between neglected Sydenham & other suburbs was stark.
Two months post-quake it was announced another shopping-mall would be built in the northern suburbs, Styx Mill area, a kick in Sydenham's guts.
4.December 2010. Exactly 3 months post-quake I would drive up Colombo St, two-way again, livelier, but still shattered with steel-mesh-fence-cordoned, damaged-buildings. Debris was cleared. Some buildings were demolished: Colombo St / Sandyford St, where Angus Donaldson Printers stood, an empty, steel-mesh-fence-cordoned site. Since the quake, in central Christchurch, there would be many empty, steel-mesh-fence-cordoned sites after demolitions.
A year post 4 September 2010 quake, most Beckenham & Sydenham ruins, Colombo St, mentioned in this post were demolished. Just weedy demolition-sites, some sites steel-mesh-fence-cordoned. Wastelands awaiting rebuild.
June 2013 ditto: Sydenham rebuild stalled.

Dear Customers
Due to the earthquake in Christchurch the supply of certain products will be affected. We are working hard to restore normal supply as quickly as possible.
We apologise for any inconvenience
A landslide over the railway & State Highway 1 near Kaikoura caused supply delays to Christchurch during the State-of-Emergency, while earthmovers removed tons of landslide-rock.
