Early Childhood Education & Antique World Demolition, Christchurch Quake

11.05.11. Eleven weeks post 22 Feb, 6.3 magnitude Christchurch quake, I wandered Peterborough St, recently escaped from the strangling CBD red zone, guarded by cops & NZDF soldiers at crossing cordons. Peterborough St was blitzed by the quake - road, houses & businesses. Extreme damage & danger everywhere.

Opposite Christchurch Casino, cnr Peterborough St / Victoria St, I came upon a fence cordoned demolition in progress: Early Childhood Education & Antique World bldg was gouged by a digger, debris festooned the wound & workmen in the bldg chucked debris onto a rubble pile below. Stationery fluttered about. A copper salvage heap was on Victoria St side.

18.05.11. Mainland Press reported that the CBD needed 900 commercial bldg demolitions & to date only 100 commercial bldgs had been demolished in 3 months, despite national state of emergency arbitrary powers. Given that rate it would take more than 2 years to complete CBD demolitions, never mind rebuilds. 300 commercial bldg demolitions were also needed in the suburbs. And that wasn't counting 1 000s of housing demolitions & rebuilds.

28.06.12. My forecast was correct, as 16 months post 22.02.11 quake, Christchurch CBD was still strangled by CERA's red zone cordon, somewhat shrunken & N-S divided along Gloucester St, with little rebuild & many demolitions to go.

16.03.13. Two years post 22.02.11 quake, CERA's strangling red zone cordons were still around the CBD, including NZDF checkpoints. Many demolition sites were in the CBD, but little rebuild. NZDF would occupy the red zone CBD for 28 months post 22.02.11 quake, before CERA dispensed with strangling military cordons & NZDF checkpoints.

Jan 2014. There was little rebuild in CCDU's core CBD.

Jan 2015. Some new bldgs in the CBD. Many demolitions. No CERA Blueprinted, anchor projects built, or even started. Just cosmetic "improvements" to Avon River banks by Antigua Boat Shed, like revamped footpaths.
