Papanui Rd: I brunched at Merivale McDonald's, ready to trek Christchurch CBD-cordon, zone 3, beside the no access, red-zone, as zone 3 was opened on Friday, 3 days before. A Sign in Merivale McDonald's:

14.03.11. Merivale McDonald's quake sign:
Just to let you know,
*Our water supply is certified as safe for consumption
*Our waste from the kitchen and toilets is being captured on-site and removed for treatment
*Water is a precious resource. Please be considerate in the use of water in our bathrooms.

14.03.11. Sept 4 & Feb 22 quake damaged, brick Carlton Hotel, Papanui Rd, national state of emergency. One News camped across the road from the Carlton, several weeks. Carlton Hotel would be demolished. A retail / office block would be rebuilt on site

Near the bottom of Papanui Rd, I trekked past a white-painted hotel, two cop-cars outside. Returning later that afternoon, I saw two more parked cop-cars & a clutch of cops in the driveway. Cops were spoilt in their hotel, a BAR sign on front, after they patrolled the broken CBD & broken eastern suburbs, citizens still in shit, three weeks post-quake, battling for potable water, chemical-toilets & portaloos.

14.03.11. Orange, plastic, road cones, steel fence, steel mesh fence cordon. Yellow digger demolishing brick, Saggio di vino, damaged by the Sept 4 quake, trashed by the Feb 22 quake, Bealey Ave / Victoria St, national state of emergency.

Papanui Rd: I trekked past One News camp: three porta-cabins, opposite sanitised Carlton Hotel ruin. TV presenter, Michael Holland sat at a table, cell-phoning. Breaking News evolved near his cosy porta-cabin: across Bealey Ave a digger demolished brick, Saggio di Vino ruin. Not a One News camera in sight.
14.03.11. Orange, plastic, road cones, steel fence, steel mesh fence cordon. Yellow digger demolishing serial quake trashed, brick, Saggio di vino, Bealey Ave / Victoria St, national state of emergency
Bealey Ave: The Jap camera crew had left their road island camp: a M9 quake & tsunami to report in Japan: 2 800 death toll so far, Fukushima nuclear radiation danger.
Saggio di vino ruin was damaged by the 4 September 2010 quake, then was scaffolded for nearly six months. It took the 22 February 2011 quake trashing for authorities to demolish Saggio di vino.
Across the road from Knox Church ruin, another brick ruin, 1 000s of brick-projectiles, leaned next to Saggio di vino. Both brick-ruins would be demolished:

14.03.11. Orange, plastic tape, steel fence cordon. Orange, Hi-Vis vested, NZDF cordon soldiers & USAR / TF in black overall & hard hat checking demolition of Saggio di vino, Bealey Ave / Victoria St, national state of emergency

When I returned three hours later, Saggio di vino was a heap of brick-rubble. Three Urban Search & Rescue (USAR / TF ) men wearing black-overalls & hard-hats, checked the demolition-site for safety. As usual NZDF-soldiers wearing camouflage-uniforms & orange Hi-Vis vests, guarded every cordon-crossing.
Papanui Rd / Bealey Ave: Carlton Court: Closed Sophie's Cafe, next to One News camp, had two rows of pics on the window: Sophie smiling with celebrity news-readers, a paradox, as real news was on the streets for anyone to see. 2012. Sophie's Cafe & other shops in Carlton Court would be closed & fence-cordoned, obstructing Papanui Rd traffic for months. Carlton Court would survive the 2010-13 quakes, the only "old" building on that busy intersection to survive the quakes.
That Monday night, One News featured film-star, Russel Crowe, who three weeks post 22 February 2011 quake rediscovered his Christchurch roots, still used his NZ passport, he said, although he'd lived mostly in Australia. After a conducted-tour of CBD-ruins, banned to most citizens who'd survived six months of quakes, Crowe preached to Christchurch citizens what to do with themselves post-quake. We never heard from Crowe again. CD would continue allowing celebrities into the CBD-cordoned for snaps, while citizens were banned access. What was CD boss Hamilton thinking?

14.03.11. White, plastic tape, steel mesh fence cordon. Feb 22 quake damaged house, Montreal St, zone 3 cordon, national state of emergency

14.03.11. Quake damaged, fallen window glass, Montreal St, zone 3 cordon, national state of emergency. USAR / TF graffito, CLEAR meant no bodies

14.03.11. Montreal St, zone 3 cordon view, Sept 4 quake demolition sites in zone 4 cordon. Caxton Press, part demolition site across Victoria St, national state of emergency
Montreal St, CBD-cordon, zone 3: Deserted. At the fence-cordoned red-zone, no access, I snapped a 4 September 2010 quake demolition- site & beyond: demolished Caxton Press, a part-demolition-site, Victoria St. Closer, glass fell off a modern multi-storey. Comfortably seated in undercover-parking, two NZDF-soldiers were indifferent to my greeting that hot, humid afternoon.

14.03.11. Steel mesh fence cordon. Feb 22 quake damaged Jubilee Clock Tower, zone 4 cordon, Victoria St / Salisbury St / Montreal St crossing, finial bent, clock stopped at Feb 22 quake time, 12.51 pm, national state of emergency. Abandoned Victoria Mansions behind
Victoria St: Viewed through the steel-mesh-fence-cordon, I snapped the iron, Jubilee Clock Tower, its iron-finial skewed by the 22 February 2011 quake. The clock was stopped at 12.51pm, 22 February 2011 quake-time. I saw red-zone ghost-hotels, Crowne Plaza Hotel & Copthorne Hotel, both would be demolished. In addition to red, yellow, green, no access / access stickers, there were more confusing Council stickers on broken-buildings:
Orange sign:
DANGER
DO NOT ENTER...
Green sign:
ATTENTION
POWER HAS BEEN REMOVED...

14.03.11. Red plastic tape, orange, plastic, fence cordon. Feb 22 quake damaged house, zone 3 cordon, Conference St, national state of emergency

14.03.11. Feb 22 quake damaged, boarded, state flats, zone 3 cordon, Conference St, national state of emergency
Conference St: Deserted, leafy, several broken-houses, mostly old brick-houses or old wooden-houses. A modern three-storey block of state-flats was boarded on the ground-floor & abandoned. As people were evacuating broken-housing & people were expelled from broken state- & broken Council-housing, a housing / rental crisis would evolve in Christchurch.
Durham St Nth / Salisbury St: ROAD CLOSED. At the red-zone, no access cordon, two NZDF-soldiers check-pointed at Laycock's Collision Repairs, being demolished by a yellow-digger. Laycock's was backdropped by Christchurch Casino in the red-zone. The Casino would survive the 2010-2013 quakes.

14.03.11. Yellow digger. View S down Durham St Nth, zone 3 cordon, national state of emergency. Crowne Plaza Hotel, Copthorne Hotel & Casino backdrop. The hotels would be demolished

14.03.11. ROAD CLOSED. Feb 22 quake, Laycock's demolition, Durham St Nth / Salisbury St, zone 3 cordon, national state of emergency

Laycock's demolition: A yellow-digger lunged, grabbed & bashed chunks of concrete-beams & roofing, chewing a huge hole, in clouds of dust. By Laycock's demolition, the two NZDF-soldiers had a makeshift, steel-mesh-cordon-fence hut, covered with a blue-tarp for weather-proofing & dust-proofing. One wore a dust-mask. They sauntered out to checkpoint vehicles accessing the CBD-cordon red-zone. Bystanders witnessed the demolition. As I was wary of asbestos-dust & cement-dust, I didn't linger. With neighbouring demo-sites along Salisbury St, Laycocks demo-site would become a shingle-carpark for Christchurch Casino patrons & business folk. 2023. It would still be a dusty shingle-carpark.

14.03.11. Orange, plastic, fence cordon. Feb 22 quake damaged house, Salisbury St, zone 3 cordon, national state of emergency

14.03.11. Yellow, plastic, tape, orange, plastic, fence cordon. Feb 22 Quake trashed house & garage, Salisbury St, zone 3 cordon, national state of emergency. USAR / TF graffito CLEAR meant no bodies

14.03.11. Yellow, plastic tape, orange, plastic, fence cordon. Feb 22 quake trashed house, Salisbury St, zone 3 cordon, national state of emergency

Salisbury St: The CBD-cordon had shrunk from Bealey Ave to parallel Salisbury St. Four ruined, red-stickered houses: 1. Fallen brick side-wall, despite wooden-bracing, brick-rubble in garden. 2. Fallen brick-facade, blue-tarped. Brick-rubble in garden, red-plastic-barrier-tape-cordoned. 3. Side brick-wall ripped off house, exposing roof-trusses & rooms. Other brick side-wall also collapsed, blue-tarped. Brick-rubble in garden. Garage collapsed, garage-door crumpled, USAR / TF graffitied, yellow-plastic-barrier-taped, orange-plastic-fence-cordoned. 4. Two-storey house-walls cracked. Boarded-windows on front door.
Sept 2019. During post-quake, Salisbury St treks, I would see several new flat developments where broken-housing once stood.
I trekked east along Salisbury St, questing Jakes' old rental-house in Ely St, to see if it had survived the 22 February 2011 quake. En route, Colombo St crossing, two friendly NZDF-soldiers beckoned me past their orange-plastic-road-cone-cordon, inviting me to take pics. Unspiteful, compared to media-cops I saw on Moorhouse Ave / Montreal St 10 days prior.

14.03.11. Orange, plastic, road cone cordon. NZDF soldiers, Colombo St / Salisbury St, zone 3 cordon, national state of emergency

14.03.11. Yellow, plastic, tape cordon. Sept 4 quake & Feb 22 quake damaged house, Colombo St, zone 3 cordon, national state of emergency. The house would be demolished, the turret grounded on site for years afterwards

14.03.11. ROAD CLOSED. Orange, plastic, road cones, steel mesh fence cordon. Seated NZDF soldier guarding Zone 3 cordon. S view, Colombo St from zone 3 cordon into the CBD red zone, national state of emergency. Feb 22 quake damaged construction site left had Sept 4 quake trashed / demolished bldgs. Stairwell steps had collapsed in blue Forsyth Barr right, trapping people. Some escaped by rope-climbing out of windows. Brown, PWC high rise left would be demolished for the planned RC Cathedral precinct

14.03.11. S view, abandoned Colombo St from Salisbury St cordon. Quake trashed, blue, Forsyth Barr behind & Christ Church Cathedral, collapsed tower rubble below. Bldgs left & right would be demolished, incl Copthorne Hotel mid left

14.03.11. Feb 22 quake damaged construction site, Colombo St, zone 3 cordon, national state of emergency. The site had had Sept 4 quake trashed / demolished bldgs on it.

14.03.11. CBD cordoned red zone. Feb 22 quake trashed, brick bldgs, Colombo St, national state of emergency. Old bldgs right would be demolished. Christchurch Town Hall, also quake damaged, behind trees, would be restored

14.03.11. Zone 3 cordon, S view, Colombo St, into red zone CBD. Yellow digger by a heap of collapsed tower rubble, Christ Church Cathedral. Steel braced "Battering Ram" rose window, W wall
Salisbury St / Colombo St: ROAD CLOSED. Two NZDF-soldiers sat in midday shade by green Europcar building.I told the soldiers, that where they guarded I'd seen several Colombo St buildings broken by the 4 September 2010 quake, which became demolition-sites. Later on during NZDF-soldiers' 28 month occupation of Christchurch-CBD, soldiers' makeshift cordon-huts would upgrade from steel-mesh-fence-cordon & blue-tarp constructions to natty, wooden-huts, $10 000 a pop. NZDF-soldiers wouldn't melt in the midday sun, nor freeze in winter.
Meanwhile, Christchurch citizens slumming in broken-houses were dubbed "resilient," enduring boarded-walls, boarded-windows & tarped-roofs for years, awaiting EQC & insurer claim-settlements. When authorities spouted "resilient" I wanted to puke.
Colombo St: A two-storey, turreted, wooden-ruin, side-wall fallen, loose roof-tiles. The house would be demolished. A concrete-building already going up post 4 September 2010 quake was damaged by the 22 February 2011 quake: concrete-bricks fallen from the top of a new wall, steel reinforcement-rods bent like spaghetti.
South down Colombo St: Christ Church Cathedral's broken-tower was a rubble-heap. My first view of the fallen tower since the 22 February 2011 quake. A yellow-digger stood over the rubble. "Battering Ram" steel-bracing was in front of the western-wall, protecting the rose-window. Otherwise, broken Colombo St was deserted: orange-plastic-road-cones, steel-mesh-fence-cordons down the street, cordoning ruins: fallen brick- facades, brick-rubble on the road. Forsyth Barr high-rise stood firm where people were trapped after a stairwell collapse. They were saved by rope-lowering themselves from a window to a lower roof. PWC high-rise ruin nearby would be demolished. Most of the old Colombo St buildings would be demolished.

14.03.11. NZDF soldier, Zone 3 cordon, Colombo St / Salisbury St, national state of emergency

14.03.11. DANGER. CLEAR.White, plastic tape, orange, plastic, fence cordon. Feb 22 quake collapsed house wall, Salisbury St, zone 3 cordon, national state of emergency

14.03.11. Feb 22 quake trashed house, Salisbury St, zone 3 cordon, national state of emergency. USAR's CLEAR meant no bodies

14.03.11. USAR / TF graffiti & rent sign, "Excellent standard of presentation," by Feb 22 quake trashed house, Salisbury St, zone 3 cordon, national state of emergency

14.03.11. Steel mesh fence cordon. Feb 22 quake collapsed, concrete & iron chimney, Salisbury St pavement, zone 3 fence cordon, national state of emergency

14.03.11. Zone 3, steel mesh fence cordon, Salisbury St, S view, Manchester St, into CBD red zone, national state of emergency. Roof of quake damaged St Lukes Anglican Church behind trees. St Lukes would be demolished

14.03.11. Feb 22 quake damaged house, Manchester St, CBD red zone cordon, national state of emergency

Salisbury St: Two-storey, old rental, a rent advert: "Excellent standard of presentation... From $145 per week..." Side brick-wall had fallen onto a carpark & footpath, exposing rooms. A wooden-fence was USAR / TF graffitied: SLAB & WALL CLEARED, orange-plastic-fence- cordoned. DANGER DO NOT ENTER sign on fence-cordon. Two concrete & iron fireplaces & chimneys lay on the footpath.
Manchester St behind the CBD steel-mesh-fence-cordon: Two ghost-houses: 1. Fallen front brick-wall, brick-rubble in garden. 2. Yellow-stickered. Fallen roof-tiles. Collapsed garage, white-plastic-barrier-tape-cordoned.
Salisbury St: I trekked past Asian food warehouse ghost where Leah had shopped: Cracked concrete-brick wall, boarded-windows & boarded-door, steel-mesh-fence-cordoned. Next-door Briscoes carpark was quakemired, like the Asian food warehouse's. Asian food warehouse & Briscoes would be demolished. Briscoes would be rebuilt on-site. A broken concrete-curb. Quakemire-heap roadside. USAR / TF graffiti on footpath & brick garden-wall: GAS OFF. HAZARD ABOVE

14.03.11. Feb 22 quake damaged Asian food warehouse, Salisbury St, zone 3 cordon, national state of emergency. Asian food warehouse would be demolished

14.03.11. Concrete block & chain, orange, plastic road cone cordoned, Salisbury St near Briscoes, zone 3 cordon, national state of emergency

Along Salisbury St, while trekking past Madras St crossing, I saw deserted streets. The CBD no access, red-zone side had steel-mesh- fence-cordons, two NZDF-soldiers at each crossing. In the no access red-zone, CBD high-rises were abandoned post 22 February 2011 quake. Over the next two years, demolishers would change the CBD-skyline forever.
In the red-zone I glimpsed more church-ruins: St Lukes Anglican Church, Manchester St, Oxford Tce Baptist Church. Both churches would be demolished, the latter rebuilt modern style, sans neoclassical, Ionic capitals. Many CBD-churches were ruined in the 22 February 2011 quake & demolished.
Damage I saw outside the red-zoned CBD: liquefactioned-streets, driveways, footpaths & carparks. Some old, broken brick-buildings & broken wooden-buildings. Some survived OK, but there were many with red-stickers or yellow-stickers, restricting entry. Red-sticker, entry forbidden. Modern buildings survived better, green-stickered or yellow-stickered. Yellow-sticker, entry restricted. Green-sticker, entry allowed. A smaller green-sticker showed power was switched off. Council's big green-stickers & small green-stickers were confusing.

14.03.11. Feb 22 quake tilted house (green stickered, entry OK) Salisbury St, zone 3 cordon, national state of emergency

14.03.11. Steel mesh fence cordon. Sept 4 quake demolition site, Salisbury St / Madras St, zone 3 cordon, national state of emergency
Salisbury St / Madras St: House demolition-site, brick rubble-heaps in garden, RED was spray-painted on one part-demolished brick-wall, steel-mesh-fence-cordoned. Next-door house, roof orange-tarped, boarded-window. Brick garden-wall, part-demolished.
Madras St / Peterborough St: Steel-mesh-fence-cordon across Madras St. Two NZDF-soldiers in their fence-cordon, blue-tarped hut guarded the no access, red-zone, CBD-cordon. Nearby, two wood & brick houses: 1. Red-stickered. Fallen brick side-walls, rubble in garden, CAUTION yellow-plastic-barrier-taped, orange-plastic-fence-cordoned. The house would be demolished. 2. Fallen brick garden-wall, brick-rubble in garden, yellow-plastic-barrier-taped, orange-plastic-fence-cordoned. Quakemired street in front of the two houses. Mud was cleared from footpath & gutter. Flooded sinkhole, about 1m diameter in the middle of the deserted road, blue-plastic-pallet & orange-plastic-road-cone-cordoned. Gutter on the far side filled with noxious, brown water.

14.03.11. Madras St sinkhole, zone 3, plastic pallet, orange, plastic, road cone cordon, national state of emergency

14.03.11. Madras St, liquefaction silt, flooding & rubble truck, zone 3 cordon, national state of emergency, view S to CBD red zone cordon. Serial quake trashed Oxford Tce Baptist Church, soon demolished, distant left
Salisbury St / Madras St: A 4 September 2010 quake demolition-site. An old, two-storey, tilted-house, green-stickered. Yes, tilted-house, green-stickered safe! Quakemire-heaps along Salisbury St.
Salisbury St: More broken-houses & broken-flats. USAR/ TF spray-painted graffiti on buildings & footpaths: CLEAR or C showed no bodies; NO GO or NG showed a forbidden area. That graffiti was repeated 1 000s of times all over Christchurch, while USAR / TF & building- inspectors filtered across town. An abandoned cardboard-box, filled with white crockery, lay by a wooden-fence, opposite a flat's sray-painted front-door.

14.03.11. Green stickered door, pink USAR / TF graffiti, quake damaged house, Salisbury St, zone 3 cordon, national state of emergency

Sign by an automatic-gate: "Do not allow gates to slam closed. Please close by hand only." The modern building's gate-post, concrete-bricks were broken, disabling the gate. The tarseal footpath was holed next to the wall. DANGER: Salisbury Lane flats on the opposite side of the street were warped & tilted by the 22 February 2011 quake, quakemire in garages below the building, white-plastic-barrier-taped, orange-plastic- fence-cordoned. The roadside block of Salisbury Lane flats would be demolished.

14.03.11. DANGER. White, plastic tape, orange, plastic, fence cordon. Feb 22 quake tilted & warped Salisbury Lane flats, Salisbury St, zone 3 cordon, national state of emergency. The roadside block of Salisbury Lane flats would be demolished

All along Salisbury St, I'd seen USAR / TF graffiti, orange & pink spray-painted on buildings & footpaths, some had NSW & UK USAR / TF markings, often with ALL CLEAR, C, or NO GO added. Throughout the CBD in three zones I'd trekked so far, I'd seen 1 000s of spray-painted markings, as building-inspectors & USAR / TF teams checked building-safety. Leah's London St school had needed a building inspection, safety check before people could enter again. Post 4 September 2010 quake, similar USAR / TF graffiti was spray-painted on buildings too.
Ely St: Water from a burst water-pipe in a garden flooded into Salisbury St. Beyond the flooding, Jake's old rental-house survived the 22 February 2011 quake. Dry quakemire heaps roadside, caused windblown dust.

14.03.11. Rubbish bin & grey portaloo. Ely St flooding into Salisbury St, zone 3 cordon, national state of emergency

14.03.11. Ely St rental house, undamaged by Feb 22 quake, zone 3 cordon, national state of emergency

14.03.11. Feb 22 quake liquefactioned Ely St, zone 3 cordon, national state of emergency

Salisbury St / Barbadoes St crossing: Orange-plastic-road-cones & warning-signs. NO EXIT sign by a steel-mesh-fence- cordon. I didn't trek zone 3 tail, beside Avon Loop, along Oxford Tce, as I'd done that days before. I turned left into Barbadoes St towards Bealey Ave again.
Barbadoes St Cemetery: Having swigged nearly 1.5 litres of cooling Coke, I trekked below trees, amongst settlers' broken- gravestones, by a broken greystone retaining-wall. Afternoon heat, during my trek along Salisbury St & some of Barbadoes St there was little vehicle-traffic, but more pedestrians.

14.03.11. NO EXIT sign. Steel mesh fence cordon. Salisbury St / Barbadoes St, zone 3 cordon, national state of emergency

14.03.11. Feb 22 quake damaged grave, Barbadoes Street Cemetery, zone 3 cordon, national state of emergency

Melrose St, parallel to Bealey Ave: Three broken houses: 1. Fallen brick-parapet, brick-rubble in garden. 2. Fallen brick-wall, green & blue tarped. Brick-rubble in garden. 3. Red-stickered, concrete spalling on porch door-post, steel rebars exposed, yellow-plastic-barrier-taped, orange-plastic-fence-cordoned.

14.03.11. Feb 22 quake damaged, brick house, Melrose St, zone 3 cordon, national state of emergency

14.03.11. DANGER. Yellow, plastic tape, orange, plastic, fence cordon. Feb 22 quake spalled, concrete columns, rebars exposed, red stickered house, Melrose St, zone 3 cordon, national state of emergency
Bealey Ave / Colombo St: Red car atop Bealey Pharmacy demolition-rubble.
Bealey Ave: Red-stickered, wooden-house, front-door boarded. Leaky, smelly portaloos. School still closed, two girls cycled the footpath past a fallen brick gate-post. Ruins: 212 Bealey Ave, red-stickered, two collapsed, semi-detached houses, tilted forwards. Fallen chimney on roof. Concrete-brick side-walls, firewall & foundation-wall broken, huge gaps in places between concrete-bricks. Concrete-brick rubble in garden & driveway. Side-wall pipes, bent, detached. White-plastic-barrier-tape-cordoned. The houses would be demolished.

@Averil. Leah starts teaching on Monday. Jake is still waiting for work to restart. I trekked two CBD-cordons this week.
Japan asked NZ to send USAR / TF teams to Japan as NZ had recent experience. UK, USA international USAR / TF teams were requested too. 12 Mar 11:00am.
Death toll 180. [Final toll 185].
National State-of-Emergency is into its fourth week now. Hope broken-buildings will go fast. Christchurch mayor Bob Parker says 1/3 or more of CBD buildings may be demolished. I saw many high-rises still OK. Dunno condition of interiors. 13 Mar 11:42pm.
@Alan. Japan is triple-whammied: monster quake, tsunami, nuclear radiation. We now avoid tall-buildings, brick-buildings & stone-buildings. We drive carefully over road bumps & potholes.
We watch out for tsunamis in NZ, if there's an offshore quake. Experts don't know, saying, "We can't predict quakes." 16 Mar 8:15am.
Later, experts would talk of a network of undiscovered faults below Canterbury.
